RealVibez: The Caribbean MTV

RealVibez is your connection to the Caribbean music community and source for the hottest reggae, dancehall and soca beats. StudioVibez, LiveVibez and interviews give this multimedia destination a competitive advantage to others who offer similar content. Videos, music, and photos are also complimented by a blog delivering breaking news about artists and the Caribbean island community.

A couple of weeks ago, the Best Of Realvibez video playlist was featured on Imeem.com, the 3rd largest social networking site in the US and strategic partner of RealVibez. The integration of Imeem widgets has made it incredibly easy to turn on playlists. The Mullings Brothers (founders David and Robert) provide a noteworthy selection of authentic, less pop-style reggae, which is often difficult to find on the web and is why I am a fan of the site. With little cash, Robert and David Mullings impressively bootstrapped their startup by teaching themselves how to code and build websites. It’s not too often that we see non-technical entrepreneurs take it upon themselves to code, but their initiative has certainly paid off. Like most startups, they had problems as well, including monetizing with advertisements and raising capital. Although they are still searching for capital to expand their business and eventually establish a television channel, they have been able to satisfy and gain advertisers by using a geographic targeting technique–a company in Miami can place ads on the homepage only when a user is viewing the website from that area. As you can imagine, this is a tremendous value-add, especially for musicians aiming to promote an event to Jamaicans.

We all know that utilizing creativity and innovation is crucial for entrepreneurs. Throughout their history, the brothers exemplified this mentality. A perfect example is when they convinced Sean Paul to allow them to join his tour for no pay as long as Robert and David could promote their website while on tour. Sean Paul helped in other ways by providing introductions to other musicians and record companies such as Atlantic Records. They also used this strategy with the largest reggae festival in Jamaica and Black Entertainment Television.

I was fortunate to hear them speak at Boston College where they offered some words of wisdom, emphasizing pro-activeness and get-to-it-iveness as opposed to spending too much time planning. Passion is likewise incredibly important as they explained “People feel it, sense it, and gravitate toward it.”

    Thanks for write-up Aex, it was great to present at Boston College last fall and share some of our experiences, which resulted exclusively because of networking on Facebook.

    We are now working on integrating Flux (owned by Viacom) into the site (we are their first Caribbean entertainment partner) so that people can leave comments and interact more. Flux members can use the same login info to join MTV.com and other Viacom-owned properties, as well as partner sites like 50cent.com.

    We will keep you posted on our developments. Keep up the great work.
